Nothing tastes better on a hot summer day than fresh sweet corn. Over 6,000 acres are grown each year in all areas of the state. Instead of sweet corn trucked in from thousands of miles away, get it fresh from just down the road at Bullard’s Farm. Some of the best tasting sweet corn is just minutes away and is as fresh as having been picked only a few hours ago from the stalk.
Indiana ranks 4th in the production of corn for grain and on average, Indiana farmers harvest 884 million acres of corn a year. Most Indiana corn is used for animal feed, although an increasing amount is going into the ethanol industry that makes clean-burning fuels for our cars. A significant portion of the corn crop also goes into the sweetener industry. Every time you open a soft drink, you are consuming part of the corn crop. American sweet corn and popcorn is celebrated in festivals and as a prized commodity traded worldwide for centuries and nowhere greater than back home in Indiana.
Fresh, local, simple, free of excess pesticides and other harmful chemicals are the mantra of What’s Cooking in Elkhart and it’s Back to the Table Family. Nothing exemplifies this way of life, lived out for centuries in the old country nor prized greater by chef’s better than cooking and enjoying local products fresh from the farm. Almost 30 years have past since the Bullard family began the count down to sweet corn. The farm, in its fourth generation, has been a prize of Elkhart since 1891. Today, you can find a host of local products from sweet corn all summer long to one of the area's largest pumpkin patches in the fall.
One of the great things about Indiana is the sweet corn that we grow in the summer! Let’s all meet July 16 at Bullard’s Farm Market to pick some fresh Indiana Sweet Corn and while we're there go ahead and pick-up fruit and veggies to share with our families. It should be the perfect weekend to get great corn, but there is also a variety of other vegetables and fruits fresh from the farm ready to be enjoyed. Remember, when graced with fresh from the farm foods, season lightly and reduce the cooking time to savor every bit of that fresh from the farm taste.
