Fair time is upon us and my thoughts turn toward Iowa of all places. My Grandma lived in Iowa. But what does that have to do with fairs? Iowa has one of the largest state fairs in the world and it was in the same town as Grandma. Every summer she would take my two sisters and I to the fair. It was an all day affair full of food, “freebies,” rides, and a lot of walking! More than that, it was the memories that were created.
Grandma was great at creating memories. In addition to the fair, she would also pack us up and take us to the amusement park. Again, an all day trip complete with a picnic lunch. How she kept up with us, I’ll never know as I’m much younger and have trouble keeping up with my own four kids!
Grandma was always up for an adventure. I can still hear her saying “There will be enough time to sleep when I’m dead”. So, we went. She took us to movies, bowling, the hot air balloon festival, the carousel, the park, and the list goes on and on. Not only did she do this with my sisters and I, but also with our children.
And it wasn’t all about doing. It was about spending time. Grandma always watched the 10pm news. After the news, it was ice cream and cookies in the kitchen. Lots of conversations took place around that table well after bedtime! I later learned that those snacks were a lot easier as a child then they were as a mother of four tired children up way past their bedtime! And yet, I wouldn’t trade those times (tired kids and all) for anything. See Grandma knew that it was about slowing down and spending time with each other, talking to each other.
My Grandma passed away one year ago today and I still miss her like crazy. I still go to pick up the phone to tell her something one of the kids did. I still find myself wanting to pack the kids up and make the 7 hour trip to visit. While I can’t do that anymore, I have 36 years of wonderful memories.
So in honor of Grandma, I am asking everyone to spend some time with their loved ones today. Create some memories. Have some conversations. Because when all is said and done, it’s not about the “things” we have, but about the memories we leave.
