Family cleaning upHow do you stay organized with four kids and a husband?  Most days I feel like the little kid’s toy that kids push around to pick up their blocks.  I follow behind everyone picking up their mess.  This has to change because it is making me very unpleasant to live with.  My older children are old enough to pitch in, and even the younger two can contribute.  Oftentimes, my youngest at three is the best “picker upper” I have.  I know it’s only because she doesn’t realize that it’s work yet!  My biggest frustration right now is that things don’t get put away.  They are either left out or shoved somewhere out of sight.  I organized the pantry the other day and two days later things were being thrown in there haphazardly.   Needless to say, I was at my wits end.  I explained to everyone (including my husband) that I expect things to be put back where they go.

My biggest struggle right now is follow through.  As a busy mom, it is easier to just clean it up myself.  This has to change.  I have to force myself to Sisters Cleaningtake the extra time right now to hold the offender(s) accountable.  In doing so, I am counting on the fact that it will save me time in the long run.  I also need to remember that this is one of those life skills that it is my responsibility to teach my children.  As I’ve said before, my goal is to raise adults not children.  Therefore, it is imperative that I take the time and put forth the effort now to ensure that they will have the skills to live on their own one day.

So how am I going to accomplish this goal?  First, we’ve started chore lists.  Each child has their own list.  They were given the opportunity to offer input into what they would prefer to do, but we assign the chores.  In addition, I start the morning explaining what needs to be done.  We write down the list, and they help cross the items off as we accomplish them.  They also know that they don’t get to play until the chores are done.
Second, I have started charging them if I have to do their chores for them.  For example, my son didn’t want to put his clothes away the other day.  I told him that if I had to do it, then he was going to lose 15 minutes in the pool.  He was okay with that.  When I asked him to put his dirty clothes in his hamper, he again complained.  I told him I would do it, but it would cost him another 15 minutes in the pool.  He quickly picked his clothes up!  Lastly, we are starting Fun Fridays.  If they get their chores done throughout the week, then they can have Fun Friday which means no chores.  Hopefully this combination of strategies will help make a difference.
